Goals of the Suburbs – Sticky

What is it about the suburbs that is so appealing? Many architectural projects that seek to do what we’re trying to do (increase the density of ’suburbia’) fail because ultimately, people don’t want what the architect is selling. Ranch houses and the neighborhoods they reside in are popular for a reason, and I think any changes that are to be made to this model need to preserve those reasons. The list that follows is one of fundamental importance to suburbia and its appeal.

Quiet and solitary, yet…
A cohesive neighborhood.
A sense of ownership (real and imagined), and therefore…
Personalization of both indoors and outdoors.
Seperation from the city…
Yet convenient driving access to it.
The appeal of the social perception of the “home”…
Opposed to the social perception of “the flat” or “the condo” or even “the duplex”.

These “rights” (subject to added, redacted, or edited entries), so to speak, are the primary guiding focus of my research and design on this project.

After researching our site, I’ve found that I’m interested in three things:

creating higher density without taking away from the desired suburban home
drawing networks on an immediate, courtyard, neighborhood, and finally city level
allowing for a tailoring of unused house space for later in a homeowner’s life

Some ideas for the latter pursuit: (Moveable walls vs. a set, gridded layout.)

Our research continues on our site in Apache Junction. Attached are two items – one is a still from the portion of our video that deals with the surrounding housing and walking distances of our site, and the other is a completed clip from the video on the lifecycle of a suburban house, which is something that interests us very much.
